Licensing and approvals

Before you use, take, or trade water, or start work on waterfront land in NSW, you must obtain all necessary licences and approvals.

Fee update

New fees for water licences and approval applications have been determined by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of NSW (IPART). Fees not covered by IPART have also been reviewed and adjusted for inflation under the Water Management Act 2000. Fees are charged to cover the cost of assessing applications. The current fees came into effect on 1 October 2025.
