Certain Lower Darling trade temporarily closed
Department of Industry – Water, Acting Group Director Water Information & Insights, Danielle Baker, today announced the temporary closure of certain assignment trade into and from the Lower Darling Regulated River Water Source.
“With the total storage in the Menindee Lakes System about to reach 480,000 megalitres, the focus is now on preserving water for as long as possible to meet the needs of Lower Darling water users including town water supply,” Ms Baker said.
“While temporary trade within the Lower Darling Regulated River Water Source is unaffected, assignment trades into and from the Lower Darling Regulated River Water Source will not be permitted at this time.
“Inter-valley assignment trade can be expected to be allowed again when the Menindee system storage recovers to more than 640,000 megalitres and it becomes a Murray system shared resource in accordance with the Murray Darling Basin Agreement,” said Ms Baker.
Ms Baker confirmed that when the combined volume in the Menindee Lakes falls below 480,000 megalitres, NSW assumes control of resources in the Lakes to the exclusion of other States, in accordance with the Murray Darling Basin Agreement.
