Mudgee pumped about delivery of new water infrastructure

Stage one of the $4.5 million Mudgee Water Security Project is nearing completion with the delivery of a world class new pump station on the Cudgegong River that will double performance and improve water reliability in the region.

The project, delivered by the NSW Government and Mid-Western Regional Council, is being done in two phases with the upgrade of the water filtration plant still to come.

The new pump station plays a critical role in improving supply to the existing water filtration plant by increasing the amount of water that can be drawn out of the river from 126 to 262 litres per second.

It includes four new pumps fitted with the latest technology replacing existing infrastructure that was built in 2005.

Mudgee’s new pump station is expected to support the community for decades to come, helping to deliver safer and more secure water for 12,500 residents and putting the community on the front foot in the face of a more variable climate.

Meanwhile, design work and approvals for the water filtration plant are still being finalised. The project is jointly funded thanks to $1.15 million from the NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program as well as $3.35 million from Mid-Western Regional Council.

Stephen Lawrence MLC, NSW Labor Government Duty MLC for the Dubbo Electorate said:

“The Minns NSW Labor Government is committed to ensuring regional towns and cities have access to a reliable supply of safe, secure drinking water.

“Replacing and upgrading existing infrastructure to the latest technology is vital to improve water delivery and to support communities in the regions.”

NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Executive Director Lisa Hingerty said:

“While the old river pump station served the community well for the past 20 years, it was time for an upgrade, so it’s fantastic to see this first stage being delivered that will lock-in water reliability for the community.

“The money we’ve injected into this project will ensure more water gets to people’s taps by doubling the amount of water that can flow from the river to the filtration plant via the new high-tech pump station.

“Mudgee is expected to be one of the fastest growing regional towns over the next few years due to the expansion of mining and renewable energy, which is why we need modern infrastructure in place to support an increase in population.”

Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy said:

“This is a significant milestone for Mudgee, improving our water security for generations to come and we’re grateful the NSW Government has jumped onboard to help get the project to where it’s at.

“We’re already seeing significant improvements in water security since the installation of the new river pump station, along with the new chemical dosing systems at the water treatment plant which were installed in 2022.

“Mudgee is well and truly on the map as a great place to live and visit and having infrastructure fit for the 21st century will enable us to support economic growth and continue to deliver top-notch water as we welcome more residents and visitors.”
