Temporary water restrictions for Buccaneit and Cunninyuek creeks

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment today announced temporary water restrictions for unregulated river water access licence holders authorised to extract water from parts of Buccaneit and Cunninyuek creeks within the Murray below Mulwala water source.

Buccaneit and Cunninyeuk creek systems are currently dry and the fringing redgum trees are extremely drought-stressed. The temporary water restriction has been implemented to protect the delivery of environmental water that aims to revive the watercourse.

Arrangements have been made to deliver a small amount of held environmental water (held under licence) into the creek system for up to a month, from Murray Irrigation Limited infrastructure. The release represents a very small volume, some 1,200ML in total, with flows of around 40ML/day.

Should a natural, unregulated flow event occur within Buccaneit and/or Cunninyeuk creeks that would otherwise trigger access, approval can be granted to allow the take of water by licence holders.

The restriction will remain in place until 30 June 2020, however; it can be amended or repealed should conditions change.
